Thames Gateway
The Thames Gateway is a long term growth and regeneration agenda which is integral to the future of London, the Greater South East and the UK. It is transforming communities along 40 miles of the Thames Estuary, from London Docklands to Southend in Essex and Sheerness in Kent.
From 2008-11, £9bn of government funding will be invested in the Gateway to strengthen and develop communities, support local businesses, attract investment and enhance infrastructure. The programme aims to:
- create a vibrant economy with 225,000 new jobs by 2016
- improve the quality of life for local communities
- build 160,000 good-quality new homes by 2016
- revive town centres and improve public services
- celebrate and enhance the area’s environment and historical character
- develop the Gateway as an eco-region.
The Thames Gateway Core Vision
The Homes and Communities Agency and Communities and Local Government commissioned Sir Terry Farrell to refresh the core vision for the Thames Gateway and to look ahead to the next 40 years. The purpose of the core vision is to:
- Revitalise the narrative for the Thames Gateway
- Help shape the delivery strategy

Priorities for the Thames Gateway
The Thames Gateway strategy sets out nine cross-Gateway priorities that address economic growth and development, sustainability and quality of life for local communities. The strategy also identifies four areas that will play a pivotal role in raising the economic performance of the Gateway. These ‘economic transformers’ are Canary Wharf, Stratford (including the legacy of the London 2012 Olympics), Ebbsfleet and Shell Haven.

Annual Report 2008/09
The HCA and Communities and Local Government (CLG) have published a joint Thames Gateway Annual Report 2008/09. The report provides an update on the significant progress made by Government, the HCA and Thames Gateway partners during the past year.
