South West

The South West region has a wide range of housing needs, with rapidly growing towns and cities and the highest proportion of rural communities in England.

The South West has the largest land area of the nine government regions. It encompasses the counties of Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire, plus the unitary authorities of Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, Cornwall, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Plymouth, Swindon, Bournemouth, Poole, Torbay and the Isles of Scilly.

Our priorities

The HCA’s priorities for the South West are to:

  • create new and revitalised sustainable communities where people choose to live, work and relax, and which fulfil local needs, aspirations and ambitions
  • work with local authorities, regional bodies, statutory agencies, housing associations, delivery agencies and the private sector to ensure the provision of affordable housing and regeneration in urban and rural areas
  • establish and deliver a strong investment programme and support high quality design and environmental standards.

Our activities

Our current activities in the South West include:

  • Pool, Cornwall: Together with local partners, we are addressing the widespread dereliction caused by tin mining in the area. By providing new homes, jobs, leisure and recreational facilities, we are helping to realise the community’s long held ambitions for the area.
  • Regional funding advice: We are working with regional partners to develop advice on funding for housing and regeneration, transport, economic development and skills. Our advice will help to inform decisions on government spending in the South West to 2018.
  • Millbay, Plymouth: This regeneration project will deliver Plymouth’s largest post-war development scheme. The new waterfront district will provide around 1,300 new homes, of which 25 per cent will be affordable, plus shops, hotel, bars and cafes. The development will deliver 21,000 sq m of business space and create more than 1,500 jobs, along with new city and harbour squares, pedestrian walking routes and cycleways.

Regional Investment Statement data

The National Affordable Housing Programme (NAHP) funding is allocated through a process of continuous market engagement. Our quarterly regional investment statements set out the proportion of this funding that has been allocated for each region.
