North West

Incorporating major urban conurbations and rural areas, the North West region faces issues including housing growth, affordability, regeneration and renewal.

The HCA is working with local authorities, the Northwest Development Agency, the Government Office for the North West and other stakeholders from the public and private sectors to form an integrated regional strategy for economic and housing growth. We take a comprehensive approach to regeneration and our investments will deliver high quality, mixed-tenure housing and new infrastructure.

Our priorities

Our priorities for the North West are to:

  • link housing and regeneration resources to support growth, deliver housing renewal, tackle affordability issues and create sustainable communities where people want to live and work
  • adopt innovative approaches to investment in order to increase housing supply and deliver new and improved infrastructure
  • reinforce quality, design and environmental standards for all new and existing developments.

Our activities

Our current activities in the North West include:

  • Castlefields, Runcorn : We are renewing a housing estate, creating homes for private sale, shared ownership and social rent, along with a new village square and improved health, community and retail facilities. www.castlefields.info
  • Omega, Warrington: We are developing a 232 ha brownfield site to create 650,000 sq m of offices, manufacturing and distribution space along leisure, retail, hotel and conference facilities.
  • Bickershaw, Leigh: We are funding major regeneration work at this former colliery site. Derelict land will be used to create 650 homes, a 40 berth canal boat marina and 2,750 sq m of employment space, which will include high quality food and drink restaurants.
  • Edge Lane, Liverpool: A £350m project includeing the creation of more than 1,000,000 sq ft of new and refurbished commercial, retail floorspace and community facilities, the construction and refurbishment of about 2,000 homes, the creation and safeguarding of almost 1,200 jobs, the widening of the road to remove bottlenecks, and the planting of more than 100 trees.
  • Kings Waterfront, Liverpool: We have changed a disused city-centre dockland site into a vibrant cultural waterfront area, with an arena and convention centre, new hotels, apartments and a public piazza.
  • New Islington, Manchester: This ambitious project is transforming a large brownfield site with a new canal and waterpark facilities, 1,400 homes, offices, a school and a health clinic as well as shops, bars and restaurants.

North West business preview

North West preview Housing and regeneration play central roles in maximising and sustaining the economic growth of the region and, critically, ensuring that the benefits of this are available to all communities.

The HCA is keen to support the three main aspects that form the foundation of the region’s housing and regeneration strategic approaches in the North West.
