North East

In the North East, regeneration and renewal sit alongside growth and affordability issues, creating a region with challenging housing aspirations.

The North East is made up of four sub-regions: Northumberland, Durham, Tees Valley and Tyne & Wear. We work closely with local authorities and sub-regional partnerships to create sustainable communities in both rural and urban areas. Our investments will deliver 1,000 affordable homes each year.

Our priorities

The HCA’s priorities for the North East are to:

  • establish a strong investment programme to achieve increased supply of affordable housing that offers high quality in design and environmental standards
  • initiate meaningful dialogue with local authorities to help shape places in the region
  • ensure ongoing momentum in the region’s regeneration areas.

Our activities

Our current activities in the North East include:

  • Middlehaven: This flagship 15-year regeneration project in the Tees Valley is providing 1,440 new homes along with facilities including a new further education college.
  • Scotswood and Benwell: We are supporting the local authority to create a local housing company that will facilitate the provision of 1,400 new homes, including affordable housing, along with neighbourhood and commercial facilities.
  • Holy Island: A community land trust will provide affordable housing for local people in this remote location. New family homes on the island will help to ensure the future sustainability of the island’s primary school.
