The RENEW North Staffordshire housing market renewal pathfinder covers Stoke, East Newcastle-under-Lyme and East Biddulph.
The North Staffordshire market renewal pathfinder is made up of a large number of disconnected areas including places within the heavily industrialised urban core, peripheral council estates and ex-mining communities.
The most extensive problems with vacancy rates, low property values, unfit buildings and general disrepair are located within the terraced sector at the core of the conurbation.
The North Staffordshire area had the second lowest house prices of all of the pathfinders, after East Lancashire. These two pathfinders share many socio-economic characteristics and face similar social cohesion challenges.
The area’s history of mining has left severe problems relating to unstable ground and foundations, which often affects residential properties. The scale of industrial closures over the last two decades has also contributed to widespread dereliction.
