Statistical releases for national and regional trends in previously developed land are compiled from information on individual sites supplied by local authorities across England.
As local authorities are generally not able to provide reports on all of the previously developed sites in their area, they are asked to estimate the percentage of the total area of each land type that is covered by their return of individual sites. These completeness percentages are used to provide the grossed national and regional estimates.
Latest figures from the National Land Use Database of Previously Developed Land (NLUD-PDL) show that local authorities identified an estimated 61,920 ha of PDL in England, down 2.9% from 63,750 ha in 2008. An estimated 33,390 ha of PDL were vacant or derelict, 54% of the total.
The figures are from the report Previously Developed Land that may be available for redevelopment that presents a statistical summary of survey results of both the supply of vacant and derelict sites and in use sites that may be available for redevelopment from 2009. The report also looks at a range of measurements concerning the potential reuse of PDL, including housing, across England as identified by local authorities.
