NewHeartlands - Merseyside

The NewHeartlands housing market renewal pathfinder covers the Liverpool, Sefton and Wirral areas of Merseyside and includes 130,000 properties.

Liverpool has lost around 400,000 residents since 1931. Despite a sharp decline in the size of an average household, the number of households in the city was lower in 2001 than it was in 1971.

New-build developments in surrounding areas have contributed to a shrinking population and a high level of vacant properties in the pathfinder area.

NewHeartlands is supporting the overall regeneration of the Merseyside area by removing surplus low-value properties, preserving the affordable housing supply and improving the mix of property.

These interventions aim to create sustainable neighbourhoods which appeal to aspirational households and capture inward migration. The housing market interventions are linked to a wide range of public sector investments in skills and training, health, education, community safety and neighbourhood management
