London

The only region in England with a directly-elected regional government, London faces diverse challenges including housing affordability and acute long-term unemployment.

The London region covers the 32 London Boroughs and the City of London. The HCA works closely with the Mayor of London and the London Assembly, the London Development Agency, Transport for London and other partners to drive housing regeneration and create sustainable communities. We work within a framework set by the Mayor’s Housing Strategy, reflecting our role as a national body that supports the delivery of local housing ambitions.

The London region has the largest budget of the HCA’s regions, with around £5bn to invest during 2008-11. The London HCA board brings together the key public sector agencies that deliver housing and regeneration in the city, to oversee our investments, facilitate cooperation and to ensure a co-ordinated effort. A sub-committee of the main HCA board, the London board is chaired by the Mayor of London.

Our priorities

The HCA’s priorities for London are to:

  • partner with the boroughs, the private sector and the affordable housing sector to deliver well-designed homes that people can afford and wish to live in
  • support boroughs in the effective delivery of the Decent Homes programme and tackling growing waiting lists for social rented housing
  • work with partners to support housing delivery through the development of brownfield sites
  • support delivery of the Thames Gateway and the London 2012 Olympics.

Our activities

Our current activities in London include:

  • Kidbrooke Vision: The regeneration of the Ferrier Estate in Greenwich involves the removal of 1,906 homes and the creation of 4,000 new homes, of which at least 1,475 will be affordable. The community will also benefit from a new park and improvements to local facilities including shops, schools and public transport. We are providing around £50m of gap funding and financial support for the development of the affordable housing.
  • Woodberry Down: We are supporting the regeneration of Woodberry Down in Hackney through feasibility studies and masterplanning. Around 4,600 new homes are planned for the area, with half available as affordable housing. The regeneration project will also deliver improved open spaces, roads, shops, schools, nurseries, health and community facilities as part of a 15-20 year programme.
