The Gateway housing market renewal pathfinder covers the whole of the city of Hull, taking in around 115,000 properties, plus the East Riding of Yorkshire.
Hull saw a population decline of seven per cent between 1991 and 2001. More than half of the city’s housing stock is terraced and 71 per cent is in council tax band A. The lack of choice in housing stock together with a high number of empty properties and low house prices has resulted in acute housing market failure.
The East Riding of Yorkshire, which surrounds the city, is included within the pathfinder. Releasing East Riding land for new housing is integral to improving the economy within the housing market area and reducing population drift from the city.
Since receiving its first grant in June 2005, Gateway has kick-started the housing market renewal programme in five priority areas, bringing forward the first phases of replacement housing and achieving support from more than 80 per cent of residents for the next stages of housing renewal.
