Community Right to Build

Community Right to Build is a new way for communities to deliver the development they want – be it homes, shops, businesses or facilities – where the benefits of the development will be retained by the community for the community. It is an alternative to a traditional application for planning permission. Seed corn funding

On May 30, Housing Minister Grant Shapps announced a funding programme to provide support for communities wishing to apply for an Order.

Community groups in England (outside Greater London) are invited to apply for a share of the £17.5m fund which is being made available to help groups to formally establish, build up their development proposals and submit a Community Right to Build Order. The funding is available until the end of March 2015. 

Separate arrangements are in place for Greater London and are being overseen by the Greater London Authority (GLA). Applicants from within Greater London can email the GLA for further details at crtb@london.gov.uk

Applying for funding

Any community group or parish council can seek to access the funding provided that they have constituted a formal organisation that meets certain basic standards. Community groups that are considering applying for a Community Right to Build Order are encouraged to first discuss their proposals with the Community Right to Build Support Hub Locality who can be contacted at:
