Affordable supported-living homes for local people in Kent
Published date : 13 February 2012
Local people with enduring mental health needs will benefit from The Hyde Group’s new supported housing development in Maidstone, Kent. The development was officially opened recently by the Mayor of Maidstone, Cllr Brian Mortimer.
Pippin Court in Tonbridge Road consists of 11 one bedroom homes and a communal unit. The homes will be occupied by people who currently access services and support from Kent County Council Supporting People.
Homes are built to Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3 which means various energy saving items were incorporated including rain water harvesting and photovoltaic panels.
Cllr Brian Mortimer said:
“We’re very proud to be creating this new community. It will help address the substantial demand for this type of housing in Kent. I would like to congratulate everyone who has been involved with the delivery of this project, which is a great example of partnership working.
“Partners – Hyde, Appledore, the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), Kent County Council (KCC), Maidstone Borough Council and mcch - have all invested a tremendous level of commitment into Pippin Court,” explained Dawn Healy, Hyde’s Development Manager.
Councillor John A Wilson, Maidstone Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services added:
“This scheme has the full support of the Council, and forms a part of the overall wider housing objective, of replacing existing shared facilities with new self-contained accommodation, which includes features and facilities that reflect modern day supported living standards.
“The Council and KCC have demonstrated their commitment and support for this scheme, by investing £300k and £125k respectively, towards its delivery. The accommodation will be more appropriate for existing and future users needs, incorporating features that enhance the quality of life for occupiers and enable residents to adjust better to independent living.”
Hyde owns or manages more than 46,000 homes, 5,000 of which were built in the last five years. But it is more than just a house builder. Hyde’s purpose – in everything it does - is to make a lasting difference to people’s lives.
